Room 504, Sunday Morning

[intraspective]

Ino was busy.

If you could call having cranked the music up with her door wide open and cross-legged on her bed reading busy.

(Ino was also inconsiderate of her neighbours and their sleeping in habits, yes.)

And reading was busy even if it was simply the same information she was pouring over in an attempt to glean new details from (so far: not working) and giving her something to look at while she struggled to come up with something to say to the e-mail she'd gotten on Tuesday. She needed to answer it, but it made her feel like crying, so she wasn't. Happy thoughts only. At least for the moment.

One thing, she thought with a sigh. All she wanted was one thing that was simple.

... she could go get a hot chocolate. That was about as simple as it got. Hmmm.

"I have a beautiful mind," he agreed, but he was laughing and shaking his head. "You know, next time you wake me up this early, you could at least provide pastries or something."

"I might have M&Ms?" she tried, wondering if that was true. Maybe? "But I ate breakfast hours ago, so..."

"Ugh, you're a morning person," he complained. "I'll take whatever you've got."

Ino stuck her tongue out at him.

"Four in the morning is normal for me," Ino admitted, closing her notebook and bouncing up to check her desk drawers for candy.

Ah ha!

"I," she said, with a pause for dramatic effect: "Even have cookies."

It was totally a healthy breakfast.

"I think that's when I go to sleep," he mused. Well, not here on the island, but he tended to pull all nighters when the pack had to patrol.

"Gimme?" he asked, making grabby hands at the package because she'd woken him up and he was hungry now. And also five years old.

"Depends," she said, smirking. "Do I get chocolate next time?"

"Why would I give you chocolate for waking me up?" he asked, because really. "Maybe when you don't wake me up."

"And if I don't wake you up, how will I get chocolate?"

Really now!

But she did hand over the cookies with a sigh.

Jake instantly dug in, opening the package and he pulled out a cookie before offering her one too. "I'll wake you up at three in the morning when I go to sleep."

"If you can get in the room safely," she said, lips twitching. "Or would you just pound on the door like a barbarian?"

"I'm not a thief," he pointed out. "I don't see what's wrong with pounding, if it gets the job done."

So so, not dirty.

Ino looked more amused at that.

"That's a poor way to do things, it ought to be done with care. Not pounding."

Ino was a bad person.

"The result's the same," he pointed out. "I don't see why I'd go through the trouble of breaking into your room quietly to wake you up, when I can just knock on the door and save us both some time."

"And make me grumpy," she said, nibbling on a cookie before handing him back the package. "That your revenge?"

"Yep," he nodded and grabbed another cookie to munch on. "Nobody said it had to be creative. Sometimes the simple plans work best."

"Simple, huh."

Ino looked thoughtful.

"What do you do if you've got a complicated problem that you need to make simple?"

He raised an eyebrow as he fished a third cookie from the pack. "Depends on the kind of problem we're talking about."

"The world ending sort of problem," Ino said, toying with a cookie. "At least, that's the biggest problem."

"Or you mean getting stuck in someone's personal hell?" he guessed, making a face. These cookies were much better than the one he'd eaten in Silent Hill. "I suppose just tearing things up wasn't going to get us out of there."

"Probably not," she said, quietly and looked down. "But no, this is more of a... timeline issue. It's complicated."

He raised an eyebrow at her. "I can handle complicated."

She pursed her lips together.

"Don't go tellin' people this," Ino said seriously. "It ain't somethin' to be spread around casually, okay?"

"I won't," he said easily, but then there was a disclosure there that he for some insane reason felt the need to be honest about. "But my pack will know. The ones back home, we sort of tap into each other's mind and it's impossible to keep secrets, but they're not here and they wouldn't tell either."

...Don't ask him if it's like a hive mind, Ino. Just... don't.

She nodded slowly. "Okay," Ino said, picking her words carefully. "Thank you for telling me."

He hadn't had to.

"Once upon a time we had a student here from a world that had just about ended and was in the picking up the pieces stage--very much Day After Doomsday, right?" They'd shared the class, it made sense. "So I got to be friends with 'em and found out how the world had gone to hell and then they graduated and someone from way in the past of their world shows up not knowing 'bout the future. And he happens to wind up bein' pretty important to me and some idiot went 'bout tellin' him about the future and now we're trying to figure out how to change it but where do you start?"

Jake wondered if it really was such a bad thing to find out now when they had time to do anything about it. Picking up the peaces sounded like a lot bigger kind of mess.

"From the start, I suppose? If you know how it started."
