Like Zack, Ino hadn't slept much after they'd sent Kueng home. There was a lot to think about and--in her case--a lot to read, look at, and watch. Tseng, Kueng's Tseng, had come through for her with every little bit of information he could scrape up that might change the future.

She'd wanted to go through it herself, first, before sending off copies to both the Tseng in her timeline (even in her head, she wasn't sure about calling him 'her' Tseng) and to Reno, with an email explaining what this information was and how she'd gotten it.

Then she settled in to review the information again.

Maybe it was morbid to watch herself die, but the fact she went out laughing, made her smile.

Hey, Iris. Reno was going to be the first to return your message. Not because Tseng hadn't gotten it yet, but because Tseng had gotten it and was immediately reviewing notes he'd taken from a phone call he'd placed to Kueng.

And, maybe a little, because Reno hadn't read much farther than 'Sephiroth' before groaning and needing to swear about it.

Honestly, it didn’t surprise her that Reno contacted her first. She knew Tseng well enough to know he'd contact her only after he'd reviewed everything himself.

Think how I feel!

Yeah, Reno had given that some thought. But at the end of the day, he was in a similar boat, the most notable difference being the kid and the fact that Iris had met him.

He had his own mess of shit to work through at the mention of Sephiroth, anyway.

Probably about as messed up as I do?

One problem at a time. Of course Cloud was out of the picture. Of course he was.

Ino flopped back on the couch, Silly fluttering to land on her stomach as she added: You watch the vid yet?

It was probably not the healthiest thing for her to keep watching, no. But she couldn't help it.

She was watching it again too. She'd been watching it a lot.

Look—I notice something’s wrong before he shows up.

She’d be a pretty sorry telepath if she hadn’t. Not that it had saved her life or anything.

He watched it again.

Silly beeped at her as she watched it again.

All the Turks in the world weren’t going to be able to take Sephiroth down.

Ino blew her breath out in a sigh and hit repeat on the video.

At least I go out laughing.

That did actually make her feel better.

She couldn't help but laugh. It wasn't funny--but it was.

Reno watched the video another couple of times.

We got our work cut out for us.

Sephrioth killed one of his Rookies. There was no way he'd take that with a grain of salt.

There was a reason he'd been willing to drop the Sector Seven plate to get to AVALANCHE, after all.

Ino considered that answer for a moment, quietly ruminating on it.

Then she called him.

There was no hesitation before Reno answered the phone. No nerving himself up to it.

Now didn't seem like the time.

"You sayin' you think you went after Sephiroth to, what, avenge me?"

Yeah, Ino wasn't bothering with hellos.

"I'm sayin' nobody fucks with my Rookies," Reno said evenly.

He didn't have much left in his life.

The only reason he'd walked away from his own reality to go to Zack's was Ino.

So, yes. That was exactly what he was saying.

Ino... honestly wasn't sure what even to make of that. It was one thing to know she was loved and it was another thing to know.

It made her throat feel tight and scratchy. Made it want to cry.

"I ain't going to die," she said quietly. "It ain't going to happen."

"I know," Reno said, his voice a little too even. That sort of empty even that it sometimes took when he was trying like hell to keep from sounding like practically anything else. "I know, Rookie. We aren't gonna let it, zoto."
