A Clearing in the Preserve, Saturday Afternoon

[intraspective]

Ino was very dubious indeed at the moment.

It was bad enough that she'd woken up in the same room with a boy. (Even if she happened to like that boy.) Bad enough that he'd had cooler slippers than she'd had. Bad enough that all her weapons had been turned into toys.

But Zack had a smile on him, and was pretty cute (for a boy), and he shared his magic marble things with her. Jump had been a lot of fun, really.

She still didn't believe him when he claimed his toy sword could summon things, though. Ino spun and came to a stop in a clearing in the preserve. "Far enough in!" she declared, because clearly things like this couldn't just be shared where anyone could see. "Now you've got to show me. I'm watching you."

Half hoping he'd fail so she could lord it over him. And half hoping he'd manage it because that would be the best thing ever.

It was absolutely adorable.

Ino wriggled in closer, right up to where he was and frowned, tongue sticking out, as she worked on getting the bird's feet free.

A few more tugs, careful not to disturb the poor thing, and Ino sat back to grin despite the scratches on her face and declared, "And free!"

"Yaaay!" Zack would have to put off the mandatory victory dance for a moment, because he was now in the process of squirming out of the bushes backwards, with the bird still in his arms so that it wouldn't just go and get itself all tangled up again. "See, Mister Chocho? You're in good hands!"

Relatively good hands.

Well, they had the best of intentions.

'Mister Chocho' did seem a little less distraught, now that they were headed for daylight again. Mister Winkles, who was being jostled about unceremoniously in Zack's pocket, was significantly less pleased.

[intraspective]

Mr. Winkles deserved to be less pleased. Ino's point of view was biased, though.

"And we'll keep you safe!" she piped up, making her own way out of the bushes and winching at her scrapes. On the other hand, she'd help save someone!

That was important.

See, they were heroes, now!

... Nevermind that the chocobo would have been just fine if they hadn't summoned the poor thing in the first place.

"I think he's calming down," Zack reported, blinking at the bird as it craned its wee little neck around in an attempt to stare him down. "Maybe now we can find something to feed to him, huh?"

[intraspective]

"Maybe we can find berries?" she said, standing as she got out of the bush. "Would he like those?"

[puppy_fair]

"I betcha he would," Zack announced, smiling quite merrily as Ino freed herself. "Everybody likes berries! I bet there are ones all ooover the place. Forests are good for those!"

Granted, this was not the jungle around Gongaga, but it had trees, which meant that it was totally close enough.

[intraspective]

"It might be too early for a lot of them though," she said, because Ino had to be logical about plants. "They don't all grow at the same time and--awww! He's adorable!"

[puppy_fair]

"And he's sooooft." Zack's wee little face was nuzzling into the chicobo's back, while the bird made low, only slightly disgruntled cooing sounds somewhere in its throat and settled into his arms. "I bet there's stuff in that garden that he'd like!"

The one that had the neat pillows in it! How many gardens could grow pillows?!

[intraspective]

"The pillows are not for eating," she informed him severely.

Well, as severely as she could when she was going to wander over to pet the chicobo. It was cute!

"But maybe it might like flowers?"

[puppy_fair]

"Maaaybe," Zack agreed, wrinkling his nose as feathers tickled at the tip of it. "But only if they're the kinda flowers that bees get honey from, 'cause chochobos need yummy flowers, not icky ones like dandelions."

The chocobo 'warked.' Zack took this to mean that it totally agreed.

[intraspective]

"Dandelions make good tea," she informed him haughtily. "But we can get him things like bluebells and stuff."

[puppy_fair]

"Do bluebells have honey in them?"

What Zack knew about flowers at this point in his life could be summed up in, 'they smell.'

You could tell.

[intraspective]

Ino's expression was pained. She could tell. Easily.

"Bees like 'em," she answered without answering the question. "That's gotta be a good thing, right?"

Zack considered this train of logic very, very carefully.

The chocobo warbled softly as it decided that it was really actually quite comfortable right where it was.

"So, all we really haveta do is follow the bees to find the perfect chochobo food?"
