The Preserve, Late Monday Night

The preserve, really, ought to have been fully dark considering how late it was, but Ino had brought a few portable lanterns and set them up around the perimeter of the clearing. She wore short sleeves despite the cold, and had her cards on her. Getting the kunai from the locker would’ve been too much hassle with everything else.
In her hands was a scroll and she was idly tossing it from one hand to the other as she waited for Reno. Because that was totally the way you treated quality literature. Of course.
The knapsack she had slung over one low hanging branch contained two other scrolls and she left them where they were for now.
[For the partner-in-crime, please!]

Seemed like a good greeting, really.

Date: 2009-01-12 08:51 pm (UTC)"Three hundred pounds, yo." Deliberate teasing of his way of speaking. The scroll was, in fact, less than five pounds in weight. But what it held.

Date: 2009-01-12 08:55 pm (UTC)"That much? Really? Daaamn, Ino. That's a shitload of potatoes."
Well. It was.
"How's this thing work, anyhow?"

Date: 2009-01-12 09:00 pm (UTC)"To get things out?" Ino said. "It's easy enough. Bite your thumb or whatever, you need just a bit more blood than a deep paper cut, and open the scroll while getting the blood on the inside. The paper soaks up the blood, so it can be used again."

Date: 2009-01-12 09:06 pm (UTC)"Interestin' way of doin' it. And gettin' things in?"
Hey, getting things out was always the easy part. A guy had to check, right?

Date: 2009-01-12 09:18 pm (UTC)A long pause, then, thinking it over some more.
"I wonder if there's some kinda way to use materia in the place of your chakra stuff. Put a slot in the scroll, slip a materia in, let the scrolls run on the planet's energy, instead. It ain't anything as big a deal as what people were doin' before, and if it means people might be able to eat or get medicine, they might even go for it."
Really, he was pulling it out of his ass as he went, but if materia could heal a person or let someone light things on fire on a whim, they could probably put things inside a piece of paper... right?

Date: 2009-01-12 09:22 pm (UTC)She frowned thoughtfully. "If the shipments were timed enough--staggered so that it wasn't every day, but if it was something like every two weeks or so I could spend the day on Gaia sealing it. It doesn't take a lot of time, and me going there'd have to be easier than shipping things to me and then shipping the scrolls to you."

Date: 2009-01-12 09:29 pm (UTC)"If you're willin' to make the trips on a regular basis, that might work for at least a little while, until people can figure out a way to get their trucks runnin' again, zoto. Does mean a bit of runnin' around, though. And the places with the food are way the hell away from the places with the medicine and that water I was tellin' you about."
He scuffed at the dirt with one foot, and then nodded a little.
"You willin' to see if we can make materia work? That'd cut down on runs into Edge, anyhow, if we can find somethin' that'll do. Ain't like the farmers'll touch that kinda thing, so we'll still need you out there, yo."
no subject
Date: 2009-01-12 09:35 pm (UTC)She tugged at her hair. "Oh, the water's a bit harder to get in the scroll, at least so far. I'm managing over a hundred pounds of it, but much more than that and I'm just... not with the working of it, yet. I'm still trying, but I figured, yeah, you might want to know that."

Date: 2009-01-12 10:02 pm (UTC)Ah! He held out a small, green, marble-shaped thing toward her.
"It's a Heal materia. Doesn't do a lick of spit unless it's put into a socket on an item, but when it is, it does pretty much the same thing a potion'll do, from my world. Fix up cuts an' scrapes an' broken bones, that sorta thing. I dunno if you can channel it to do other stuff. Never really tried. I think materia is what materia is, and if you want somethin' else, you gotta merge it with other shit, too."
A pause.
"But hey, it's somethin', if you're willin' to work with me to try an' figure out if we can put a slot on a scroll, yo."
no subject
Date: 2009-01-12 11:29 pm (UTC)"'Course I'm willing," she said, mildly piqued that the little marble thing could heal as well as she could. "Maybe on the sides of the scroll..."
Ino contemplated the scroll thoughtfully. "I think that's going to have to be pretty much the only spot we can try it. Most of it's just paper, after all."

Date: 2009-01-12 11:59 pm (UTC)"Eh, not everyone can get their mitts on it so easy. Materia's more expensive than potions, too, zoto." He pursed his lips for a moment, thinking. "Thing is, people are so worried about killin' the planet even worse, they're afraid to borrow a little here an' there now and then to help pick up the pieces. I ain't seen someone who wasn't tryin' to destroy the planet use the stuff in a while, now."
A pause.
"I ain't tryin' to destroy the planet. Just sayin'."

no subject
Date: 2009-01-13 12:53 am (UTC)"Stronger or weaker how?"
It also seemed like the sort of question that was up for interpretation.

Date: 2009-01-13 12:59 am (UTC)"I'd do it, if I had to. It's what I do. A job's a job, yo." A beat. "And I could do it, too. Went back to Gaia a few months back and took a bomb to an overpass I was standin' by. No time to think about the consequences. You get the job done."
That was the important part.
"I think I'd feel it more after, though, if I had to do it again. I'm just startin' to be able to square my shoulders up again."

Date: 2009-01-13 01:07 am (UTC)"Found out I'm back on active duty," she told him. "So I guess I'll be finding out soon."

Date: 2009-01-13 01:11 am (UTC)This was a very important distinction to make. It meant the solution was going to be far more difficult.

Date: 2009-01-13 01:36 am (UTC)He drummed his fingers against his lap, mulling it over for a moment. And then he grinned.
"Clearly, this means we gotta duke it out sometime. That helps with the first part, anyhow. The rest..." He shrugged. "My way of dealin' with that don't work for everyone."
no subject
Date: 2009-01-13 01:40 am (UTC)"And, I know," Ino admitted, "that your way might not work for me, but at least you get what I'm talking about. And that helps too."

Date: 2009-01-13 01:47 am (UTC)"Sometimes, just gettin' it off your chest helps," he agreed. "I got an open ear, if it does ever get to your head, okay?"

Reno's morals, in a nutshell.

Date: 2009-01-13 02:14 am (UTC)"Yeah," Ino said, leaning so far back that she was more laying then sitting on the ground. "Like that. Only--you guys don't start out as Turks, right? Not from the cradle."
