Room 504, Friday Evening

[intraspective]

After calling Evie about computers, Ino could be found sitting with crossed legs on her bed reading over a scroll she'd brought with her from home.

Well, attempting to read anyway, the theory stuff her dad wanted her to go over was so dull that she wasn't retaining anything.

Ino was mostly just killing time.

Ino was more than willing to listen to Evie talk about pyramids, because they sounded absolutely fascinating. She tried to visualise something so huge, "And it's all man-made?" Ino was in awe, "No technology? They didn't have any special powers or anything?"

"Well, there have been theories of alien intelligences and magic, but really, it was perfectly possible for them to have been built without either. Just very difficult, pulleys and a great deal of manpower and ramps and clever tricks with steps and taking a *very* long time," Evie nattered on. Then she started to blush, and said, "Excuse me. Pyramids are rather an enthusiasm of mine. I grew up in Egypt, and I want to be an archaeologist. So I tend to get rather tiresome on the subject."

Ino shook her head quickly, "No, no - it all sounds very interesting! Do you have books on them I could borrow, or maybe the library would have a few? An archaeologist studies pyramids, right?"

On the computer screen the picture of the pyramids blinked out replaced by something else, "What's going on now?" Ino asked.

"Oh!" Evie blinked as her little dancing Egyptians came into view. "It's the screen saver. If I just leave the screen like that for too long, and don't do anything? This comes on to keep the screen from burning out." She quickly moved the mouse and then said, "Do you *really* want books on Egypt and pyramids? Because I have loads. And yes, the Library would have even more!" She took a breath, then determinedly clicked on the icon for Word. "Um, archaeologists study the past-- ruins and tombs, and things that are even less well-preserved, like writing and pottery and... my parents are archaeologists, I've never wanted to be anything else." She took a huge breath. "Right! And, this is a mouse, although I have no idea why it's called that. It moves the little... pointer thing, around on the screen."

Circles and circles as Evie did so. "See?"

"The screen catches on fire?" Ino asked confused, "Isn't that kinda dangerous?" Watching as Evie made another circle with the... mouse-thing... Ino said, "I'd read a book or two, at least, just to understand a little more about them."

"What can you do with the mouse-thing? Besides move it around."

Evie hadn't realized how many colloquialisms she'd picked up until she'd started to try to explain this to someone new to the concepts. "Oh! I mean it... Hmm." She stared at the screen, and said, "Breaks. The little bits and pieces don't want to be on too long-- like a light bulb?" She smiled. "They lose energy! There. And the pointer-thing--" She put her finger on the screen, next to the Word icon, and then clicked on it. "Can choose little ... programs? Um. Options. Things for the computer to do."

A new white screen came up, and Evie began to type:

See? Like this! I can write a letter to my brother!

"Ooh." That made much more sense, to Ino and she watched as Evie's typing made the words come across the screen, "It is a bit like a typewriter, just like you said. But how do other people see it when it's on your computer?"

"You have a brother?"

"Well, they can't right now-- well, they could, if I sent it in e-mail..." Evie frowned. "Oh, I wish Broots were still going to school here. He explained it all to me very easily, and so did Professor Sciuto. But they're both gone now." She sighed. "Umm, it's easier, and anyway, my brother doesn't have a matching computer, to simply print it out." She made the pointer twirl around the {PRINT} icon at the top of the page. "If I had this plugged into a printer, it would send a little signal? Like a wireless, or a radio? To the printer, and it would type this all out on a sheet of paper. That's what I usually do. It's very useful for homework, as well." She nodded. "I have an older brother, he's in Jerusalem right now... Do you have any brothers or sisters?" she asked, afraid she'd been monopolizing the conversation.

Ino nodded, she still wasn't sure exactly how it managed to send the words around places - how did written words go through a radio? - but the general idea of having the words wind up on a bit of paper made sense. A little. Maybe. "Wouldn't it just be easier to write it out by hand?" She wondered out loud.

"Nope! I'm an only child," Ino sighed theatrically, "Though I spend a lot of time making sure my teammates don't get in trouble. Shikamaru's so lazy, and Chouji doesn't care about his health at all! They drive me nuts!"

And she was still pissed at them for going off and nearly getting themselves killed without taking her along. Seriously pissed.

"Teammates?" Evie asked, curious. "A sports team? Or something else?" She frowned and admitted, "Sometimes it is easier to write by hand, but this way is convenient too. I've grown used to it." She looked frustrated. "Although clearly I am the wrong person to explain it."

She clicked on another icon, and brought up Google. "Here, look."

She typed in "Cheops, pyramids, Egypt" , got a list of links, and clicked on this page.

"Ah, no." Ino tapped her forehead protector on the unmarked leaf. She was wearing it around her waist because it looked better that way. "I'm a ninja, and when we graduate from the Academy we're put on to teams for training purposes and given an instructor."

Ino watched as the information appeared on the screen, "Oh, wow, it's just like a scroll or something!"

"Ooooo!" Evie said, leaning forward to study Ino's-- belt? "There's a few other ninjas here at school. Doesn't that take rather a lot of training, just to get through school?" She gave Ino a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry none of your teammates are here at Fandom with you... and yes! It is like a scroll!" she said, delighted. "They even call this little bar here on the edge the scroll bar." She shifted it back and forth, so Ino could see how the page progressed. "And it's ... oh, connected, I suppose is the best word, to a thousand thousand libraries. I adore that aspect of computers."

[and I am crashing out! SP to tomorrow?]

Ino wasn't very enthusiastic about the mention of other ninjas. She had yet to go and check out Kabuto's claims of the Yondaime being here, and wasn't sure she wanted an answer either way.

"Years of training." Ino said brightly, "I started when I was five." At the mention of her teammates her face twisted, "I'm not sorry," she told Evie, "since Dad sent me here to have some time away from them."

Yay! She'd gotten something right about computers! Ino was delighted. "... a thousand thousand libraries?" She hadn't even known there were that many in the world!

Evie gave her a sympathetic look anyway, despite the protest, and said, "Well, it's very nice here. I'm sure you've already noticed that." She beamed at Ino, who clearly had her priorities straight. "Yes! At least that many! You can find out nearly anything on the Internet!" Evie's faith in computers was slightly exaggerated, but compared to 1917, it really was the best comparison. "What would you like to know about?"

Since Ino had never seen a computer before there was no way for her to know that it was an exaggeration so she took Evie's statement at face value. "Um, something about flowers? My Mom runs a flowershop back home."

And her mom would never believe this.

Evie typed in flowers roses and then clicked on a image link. Blue, red, lavender.... "All different kinds, see?"

"Oh wow," Ino stared at the flowers for a bit then said, "And all you have to do is type in the words? That's it?"

"Yup! And then click on the 'links'! The blue words that are lit up," Evie explained. "Here, you try. Type in something else." She sighed. "Of course, there's other problems with using the Internet..." And blushed.

Ino was more than willing to try. "What should I type in?" She asked, "Something simple to start with would be good, right?"

Noticing the blush Ino had to ask, "What problems? It's not just an giant library thing? Is there more to it than that?"

"Well, there are auctions and movies and various other things, and, um. Pornography," Evie nearly whispered. She coughed. "Ahem. So, there are some links you shouldn't click on, even if they look innocuous. Girls-with-gloves dot com would be a *particular* mistake."

Ino blushed at the very thought. "And people look at that on the compter?! That's, that's..." Something Sakura's sensei might be interested in. "I won't go looking for it!"

"It's there all the same," Evie said dolefully. "I recommend being *very* specific in what you're looking for. Oh! And if there are 'pop-ups'-- little screens that just open with ads, or messages-- you should contact a teacher or one of the students who is good with computers to fix your computer. They're not always obnoxious, but sometimes they're very inconvenient." She sighed, then smiled. "What else do you want to know?"

"I'll be careful." Ino promised, "And specific." She thought for a moment. "Are they expensive?" Ino asked, drumming her fingers along the side of the desk, "Computers, I mean."

"Well, this one is actually loaned from the school. I believe they *are* terribly expensive, but they're very cordial about loaning them to you, as long as you do schoolwork on them," Evie said. "Perhaps Principal Washburne can arrange for you to have a loan, since Professor Sciuto left the school?"

"I'll ask her, if I remember, sometime next week then." Ino said brightly, "That's the basics then? Or is there more that you think I should know before trying it on my own?"

"I really think that's it. Mouse. Keyboard. Screen." Evie pointed. "Off button! Very important. And, um." She frowned. "No, I can't think of anything else." She gave Ino another happy smile. "But you can come by my room at any time, to borrow those books, if you're really interested. And to get cookies! Mum sends them from home."

"Do I have to turn it off in a specific way? Or can I just hit the button and have it work?" Ino said smiling back, "I'll come around for sure! You know all about pyramids, and I have to bug you about those definitely."

"You need to shut off whatever you're doing first. Click the little 'x' box up in the right hand corner. Then, umm, this down here-- see where it says 'log off'? Then it'll shut off by itself." Evie brightened. "Lovely! And you can tell me things about ninja school. I've always wanted to know more about ninjas. And pirates," she admitted.

Well, that seemed pretty self-explanatory.

"I'll be happy to tell you what I can about ninja - some things aren't supposed to be talked about though - but I don't think I'll be much help with pirates. Do we have any in the school?" Ino grinned at Evie, "I think that's everything then! Thanks so much!"

"We used to?" Evie said in a doubtful voice. Now that Barbossa and Pippi were gone, she wasn't sure there were any left. "But mostly I think they've moved on." She snapped the laptop shut, and said, "You're very welcome! I'm just glad I could help. And remember what I said about the cookies!"

"Well, I suppose that pirates aren't the sort to stick around for very long." Ino said thoughtfully, "And there's no way I'm going to forget about the cookies!"
