Reno... kinda did fear. Reno was fearing this whole day spent with a pair of kids that he knew couldn't ever exist, for the sake of... well... for the sake of the whole damn world. He was fearing the possibility of actually liking the fucking kids.

Shit, he was fearing a lot of things. But you'd never be able to tell just by looking at him. Not with that smirk on his face as he sauntered onto the grounds and up to the more or less happy family that was standing there.

"Someone ask for Uncle Reno, yo?"

"UNCLE RENO!" shrieked an excited, dark-haired very blue-eyed girl as she tugged her hand out of her father's and flung herself at the aforementioned uncle fully expecting a hug.

... Well, she was fully expecting to give him one anyway.

"Hiii!"

Give her a second...

"Where's Uncle Rude?" Big hopeful eyes stared at him. Uncle Rude was awesome. And normally with Uncle Reno. "Have you lost him? Did you know Aunt Rikku said we can maybe do explosives?"

That wasn't entirely how the conversation ~~still in progress~~ had gone . Inori was not above twisting things for her own benefit.

"And Uncle Rude has the best explosives!" See? She had a point!

Ino was just going to sigh. And try not to giggle as Inori chattered at Reno.

Zack did his damnedest not to look too concerned at all of this talk about explosives. Honestly, he did. But, really, one could only be so nonchalant about one's future child babbling about blowing things up while clinging to a Turk.

And this was why he was giving Ino a bit of a sideways glance, now.

"Oh, good. Explosives with Aunt Rikku."

He didn't even know who that was.

"Reno's girlfriend," she said, in a whisper. "I used to work with her, too. If she mentioned explosives to Inori, then she means she'd be doing it with every safety precaution in the book." She hoped. "And probably checking with us first."

Ino was... less bothered by the clinging to the Turk thing. Ino, herself, sometimes clung to that particular Turk, after all.

"Rude's explosives are ShinRa technology at its finest," Reno laughed, pulling giving in and hugging back. Why the hell not, right? "But he's back home today. Aunt Rikku an' I are on a weekend vacation out this way, an' Rude had work to do."

Actually, Rude didn't have work to do at the moment. But for as much as Reno loved Rude, he wasn't about to share a weekend with his girlfriend with him, either.

He straightened up and nodded at the parents standing there (okay, mostly at Ino while he worked on not seeming like he was standing in front of a freaking ghost) and grinned some more.

"Uncle Reno'll take good care of 'em today, don't you worry."

"Just like you always do," Angeal added, beaming up at Uncle Reno before looking over at Mom and Dad and bouncing on his toes. "If I promise to be really, really good, can I get Uncle Reno to take me out hunting Kimara Bugs next time we visit him? Can I? Pleeease?"

Zack blanched a bit. Kimara Bugs were like five-foot mantids. Wasn't going to happen.

Angeal, seeming to sense this fact, stuck his lip out in a pout and mumbled under his breath. "Well, it was worth a shot."

"No fun monsters 'till we're Genin!" Inori sulked then stuck her tongue out at her brother. "I'll be Genin aaages before you!"

Maturity was not often found in nine year olds, no.

She disentangled herself from Reno's hug and clung to his hand instead. "Can you tell Uncle Rude I said hi? What're we going to do today? Can we play with materia?"

Ino was torn between laughing and just… being glad they were going to be off doing things.

"Thanks," she said, offering Reno a smile and gently shooing Angeal over to him. "I owe you one."

Going from the way Inori was clinging, she probably owed him several. Yes, definitely several after the brain breakage this day was going to cause.

Several and then some, and Reno was planning on collecting interest.

"Don't mention it, Rookie. You two just do your thing, an' I'll keep an eye on the spores until you want 'em back, yo."

And then he was reaching for the other kid's hand, too, so that he could drag them away to... adventure, or some shit. Look, he didn't know. Wasn't like they were his kids.

Zack watched Reno lead the kids off, the trio of them babbling about giant bugs and things that exploded, and then shifted his weight uneasily from one foot to the other.

"And you trust him?"

Look, his only real experience with Reno involved the Turk swinging an electrified baton in his face. It kind of left an impression.

"I do," she said, looking up at him. "He's my mentor."

He hadn't always been that way, no, but somehow that was how it'd come out.

"He's got his faults, but he's there when I need him without fail. I trust him."

Inori waited until they were out of sight of The Parents, Angeal doing most of the talking while she clung to Uncle Reno's hand and chewed on her lip.

Then:

"Spores?"

That was indignant, yes.

Zack pursed his lips a little, and then he relented and nodded.

"If you trust him, that's good enough for me." He took a moment to watch the kids disappear around the corner with the redhead, and then looked back at Ino.

... And pretty much oozed into a hug, because wow, did he ever need one.

And it was met with a laugh, because... Yes, Reno did think he was funny.

"It was either that, or puppies," Reno replied, cracking a grin her way. "But that's too damn cuddly for anything that's half Ino, if you ask me, yo."

"I know," she said, wrapping her arms around him tightly. "It's hard."

Ino wasn't blind. She'd seen how he'd been coping.

"You're doing a good job."

In... lying to their kids. Ino couldn't fault him in this case.

"My dad is not cuddly," she insisted. "He's a very formidable shinobi."

Well, he was.

"He's good at lying."

That too. He was also good at cuddling. Shut up.

Because we thought the playercest here had to be exploited for all it is worth. Also, we think we're hilarious.

"It's been a week," Zack mumbled, careful not to hold her too tightly. "I know I have to deal with it, but I wasn't exactly expecting that."

Which didn't mean they were anything but the best children ever. What it meant was that he was tired and his heart ached. Moving on and healing were difficult to do when you found out that one of your possible future kids was named after someone that you missed terribly.

"I know," she said soothingly. "I... should've warned you it was possible. It completely slipped my mind."

She'd been busy picking up the pieces of Zack.

Yep. Zack the ninja. There was a phrase that would never cease to make Reno simultaneously feel the need to laugh and freak the hell out all at the same time.

The result had him looking pretty neutral.

"You figure he's lying about anything right now?" See Reno. See Reno lift an eyebrow. It seemed safe enough to discuss at the moment, considering the little boy with the painfully ironic name was wandering ahead trying to catch grasshoppers.

Zack shook his head, and sighed a little into the hug. "It isn't as though you'd have any idea what they'd be named," he pointed out. "The kids themselves are... nice."

Again, unexpected. But nice.

"He's not very happy," Inori said, kicking at a rock. "But he's not really lying when he smiles at us either."
