"My father is leaving soon. If you'd like to meet him, it'd have to be soon. If not, well, I wouldn't be surprised, but I thought I'd mention it to you.

"I hope to see you soon even-- no matter what. Be well."

"Liir," Ino said conversationally into the phone, after gaping--seriously, what was up with a message like that?--for a long while, "you're an idiot. Staple him to Fandom."

He was in to pick up the phone for her.

"I know I'm an idiot. But he's made his decision. I've... spoken against it. He's still leaving."

Ino thumped her head against the clinic desk. "That's why, in stapling, you don't give him a choice."

"He knows what's waiting for him, or at least as much as I could tell him. He's going to do his best to prevent what happened. And the amount of time that's passed, well, who can say? But I can't staple him. I wouldn't even know how."

"I'm sure," she said dryly, "that you've seen other people use a stapler in the year you've been here. It's not hard. Press it against what you're stapling together--in this case, your idiotic father and, say, a wall--and push down. There you go. Staple him."

"You know what I mean."

He breathed out.

"I was just calling to let you know. I didn't want you to think that our fight meant-- meant more than it means. And I wanted you to know."

"The fight means a lot," she said evenly. "What do you want me to do about it? You want me to meet a guy I think is a total idiot because he's walking into death when he's got the chance to avoid it, and have to deal with both you and him, who no doubt, has his own opinion of me and I severely doubt it'd be favourable."

Not that she could blame him there.

"If you're not going to make him stay," she continued, "then I'm not much of a help. If you want hand-holding and support about how hard this is, Amber would be a better bet. I have no sympathy for idiots who do things like that to themselves, and one of the major reasons we're not on good terms is because I don't want to deal with picking up after you fall apart."

"Again," and he breathed in once before continuing, "I only called to let you know. I don't want any handholding. And no one asked you for sympathy.

"And the fight means many things, but it doesn't mean that I don't take you into account. I don't want you to do anything about it. I wasn't calling for advice. I'm only letting you know and offering."

"No," she said, unimpressed, "only your phone message was, like, the most passive aggressive thing ever. That's got to be a talent. You're lucky I called back, because I seriously thought about just deleting it."

"I am sorry he's chosen to be an idiot," Ino continued, "but that's about it. Meeting him would probably wind up in disaster, so I don't know what you thought that would accomplish, and I quite frankly, am trying to avoid disasters like that. There's a load of people smarter than me, but I'm not that dumb."

"Thank you for letting me know. Have a good day, Ino."

And that was all he said before hanging up.
