Room 504, Monday Afternoon

Ino got out of class, and it was one she was really going to have to reread her notes for and hope the handouts made sense because paying attention had kinda... failed her there, grabbed a quick sandwich from the common room (because, really, sandwiches were just about the easiest thing ever to make and she was hungry) and wandered back to her room with it in tow.

And the mirror. And the fact that, if she was going to make sure she was ready for things, then she ought to maybe make sure she had everything all set out. For the moment though, she was just sitting on her floor and staring at the mirror while she ate her sandwich.

"Hurley," Ino said, glad to be focusing on someone else's issues right now, "you can't take responsibility for her actions. She's completely old enough to know her own mind. Your asking wasn't out of line, seriously, I'm not kidding at all."

"But it's not like I didn't know about the engagement and stuff," Hurley said.

"She still could've said no," Ino insisted. "You understand that, right?"

Hurley thought. "So... is it wrong for me to want to date her, even though she has to marry the dude?"

"No," she said, completely confident. "It's not wrong for you to want to date her--because you're not the one in another relationship, even if hers isn't her ideal."

"Right," Hurley said. "...thanks, Ino."

"Sound more confident," she ordered.

Because that'd work.

"And remember you're worth way more than you think you are."

Hurley had a couple of responses to that, but he went with. "I'll try," he said. "Cause I just... want her to be happy, you know?"

That got a bit of a shrug. "I think," Ino said, "just from talking to her a time or two, that her biggest problem is with herself. If she doesn't want to be happy, and doesn't try to change things herself, then anything you do isn't going to help."

Hurley frowned, but nodded. "Yeah. Well, and the whole 'curse' thing."

Another shrug.

"If she'd be happy to have it cured, then she should be fine with the marriage. If she's not fine with the marriage, then she ought to be looking for other ways to have it cured--or consider not having it cured and living her own life anyway."

Hurley tilted his head. "You know, I never thought of it like that."

"That's there's more options?"

Hurley nodded. "That kinda... gives me more hope."

She grinned. "Then I'm doing something right. Just, you know, remember--there's always more options."

Hurley nodded. "Thanks. Seriously. You... helped me think about this more realistically."

"Excellent," she said, offering him a smile.

Hurley smiled back.

"So how are you? I kinda... stole the conversation."

"Contemplative," she said, getting up and moving to flop down on her bed. "And alright, I guess."

Neatly skipping over the issues.

"I got made TA for American History."

"Dude, what?" Hurley said. "Do you... how much of that do you know?"

"I know Mount Rushmore has faces on it," she said, thinking about it. "And that our parking lot is in Virginia, and we're in Maryland."

A beat.

"That's about it. Though I'm studying up on it."

"Cool," Hurley said. "Kinda like... immersion learning. Me and the flower shop."

...that was about a million times nicer than anything Ino would've called it.

"How's that going anyway?" she wondered.

"Awesome," Hurley said. "I know more about orchids now than, like, I thought I ever would."

"There's a lot of different kinds of them," she laughed. "And many other flowers too. They're not a fast thing to learn."
